Today’s church crawl took the All Saints’ party across Mendip to Croscombe, and a church with one of the most extraordinary displays of Jacobean carving in the country. Christopher Marsden-Smedley outlined key points in the history of the building, especially the extraordinary pulpit and screen, eloquent symbols of movement against what was seen as popery. The architectural history was followed by the liturgical elegance and calmness of Compline, led by the Rector, the Revd Nicholas Maddock. The evening concluded with an al fresco meal a few yards down the road at The George.
