www.wrington.net Wreath-laying in remembrance of RAF pilot On 22nd August, 1944, Flt Lt Rodney Rodgers, RAF, and two French pilots were ordered to take out the engine of a train about to transport prisoners to a concentration camp. Avoiding harming the passengers on the train called for precision aiming and an extremely tight banking manoeuvre immediately after the bombs were released to avoid some towers. Flt Lt Rodgers succeeded in destroying the engine without damage to the rest of the train, but crashed whilst pulling his aircraft round. Echo Irving, on behalf of the Wrington party, and M le Maire laid a wreath at the war memorial in his honour - an extremely moving moment much appreciated by the Wrington party. The mayor and other speakers recalled the British war effort with enormous warmth and gratitude. Click thumbnail to enlarge Committee visit 18-21 March, 2011
